Abstract

Tracing the sources of American attitudes towards teachers and teaching, the author discusses the influence of Puritan ideology and the intimate linkage of teaching to the ministry in colonial New England. He analyzes career patterns of Harvard tutors and the role of the University in providing educators for the Province.
