Abstract
In this article the author chronicles the major movements of Afro-American literature,demonstrating both its particularity and its universality and depicting the manner in which the content of Afro-American experiences shapes the literary forms through which it is expressed. Throughout the essay, Selwyn Cudjoe describes the perspective and methodology which underlie his teaching of Afro-American literature.
